Offseason Paddling
Thursday, 18 August 2011
Thank you for your interest in Marina Outrigger!  Your timing is great because our offseason paddling program has begun.

Our first offseason practice will be October 1, 2011 at 8:30 am. Arrive early, as we sometimes have capacity issues. Plan on being at the beach for about 3 hours.  The offseason paddling practices take place on Saturday mornings Oct 1 to Feb 25. We take a few Saturdays off around the holidays.
The fee for the offseason program is 125.00- click here for online payments (There is no charge for the first session, so you can try it out).   Parking is across the street from our beach on Palawan and the machine takes cash or credit cards.

Download the liability release and bring down on your first day.

Many people who started in the offseason have continued on to join our racing teams, when official practice begins in March.  Whatever your goal, offseason paddling is a great entry point to the sport.

If you haven't already, please read the New Paddler section to get acquainted with the sport and our club. Directions can be found there.

Please register for our online forum and check back for future updates. We hope to see you in the water soon.

KK2011 Recap
Wednesday, 18 May 2011
The local paper Argonaut had an excellent recap of the day's events:

Kahanamoku Klassic draws big in Marina del Rey

This past Saturday afternoon, May 7, under a hazy sky, dozens and dozens of outrigger canoes (211 team entries) powered by six -person crews blasted through a lightly choppy Pacific Ocean as part of the 2011 Kahanamoku Klassic, an annual event that draws paddlers from all over the Southern California area to tough-out an 11-mile semi-triangular course to the Santa Monica pier, before returning back to Marina del Rey Harbor.

While the scene at event headquarters at Mother's Beach in Marina del Rey was laid back, with nearly one thousand people milling around clad in board-shorts and flip-flops, on the water it was all-out competition.

Focused crews, eyes-fixed straight ahead, grunting, paddling with a particular mixture of synchronicity and brute force.

“It was perfect, we had a lot of great conditions until we hit the jetty where it kind of turned into concrete,” said long time paddler, former Marina del Rey Outrigger Canoe Club board member and race chair Nancy Dopp. “It was a little bit of a struggle but it was fun - all in all a great day.”
