Why Paddle?
Welcome to Marina Outrigger Canoe Club. We are excited to have you as a new paddler and look forward to introducing you to one of the fastest growing and most exciting sports in California.
Outrigger paddling has been around for centuries when Polynesians used it as a means of travel from island to island. The outrigger canoe was designed to be an open ocean craft. Paddling has a rich history, and alongside surfing and diving, forms the holy triad for waterman. Most of the original paddlers in Hawaii, and the first paddlers in California were true waterman and waterwomen, with the outrigger canoe just another extension of their connection to the ocean. Look at many of the top waterman, and paddling will probably be part of their repertoire.

Paddling as a sport is at an interesting point in its history. The growth is phenomenal, and allows an avenue for men and women of all athletic and committment levels to train and compete. Whether your goal is to paddle for fun, or to commit to compete at a high level with amazing athletes, there is a place for you in this sport. Maybe you just want to get into shape. Others may want to elevate their fitness to another level.
How many people do you know who can say they've paddled across the Catalina Channel? How about the Kaiwi Channel between Molokai and Oahu, one of the most treacherous stretches of water in the world? You'll be able to count yourself amongst that group. You'll learn a lot about the history of the sport and of our club, and you'll be part of it as it grows. You will learn the outrigger stroke, with all members of the crew acting in unison. It's an amazing feeling when all 6 paddlers are firing on all cylinders, in the zone. It goes without saying that you'll get a great workout, and get into great shape- again, your commitment level will determine how far you can go. You'll also be a part of a team, a community- ocean lovers like yourself.
So welcome. MDROCC can fulfill your needs, whatever your goal.

You should feel comfortable in the water. Remember this is a water sport and eventually YOU WILL GET WET. Although each canoe is equipped with lifejackets, it is very important that you know at least the basics of swimming --- treading water and being able to propel yourself forward in the water, even if it's dog paddling! It is also important that you respect the canoes. You will learn how to take care of them, carry them, how to get in and out of them and how to refer to them.
Things you will need if you're to be a paddler . . . - Paddles - the club provides paddles for each novice member. Please take care of the equipment by rinsing the paddles after each use and putting them back in the paddle box.
- Clothing - wear something that can get wet, like surf trunks, or neoprene shorts and capilene top. Windbreakers, hats and rashguards help on cold weather days. Announcements will be made when club uniforms will be available for purchase.
- Water/Food - bring a bottle of water that can be strapped to the canoe with a bungee cord and a nutrition bar. Camelbacks are good investments.
- Sunscreen - the water reflects so protect yourself! Sunglasses for sunny days.
Please download and fill out this Liability Release form , and bring it down with you to the beach. You can't get in a canoe without one. Please make sure all information is legible. Mahalo. |
